The hard of hearing among the global audience of millions were left without a clue as to what was being said at the memorial to the late Nelson Mandela.
One deaf South African MP tweeted during the service that the unknown person who was on the podium and signing was “signing rubbish”. “Zero percent accuracy” is how another expert summed up his ability to translate the speeches with sign language.
For some in the 95,000 seat soccer stadium it was a time to celebrate in song the life of their former president. Others struck a more sombre mood.
But at times it was jovial among several world leaders including the US President Barack Obama. Danish Prime Minister Helle Torning-Schmidt and British Prime Minister David Cameron huddled together with him for a smart phone photograph.
But it is unlikely the ‘selfie’ will ever make it onto the White House mantelpiece as one person who looked less pleased was the First Lady.

Obama is a fool he moans about the media and their side shows. When he wanted to talk about healthcare and all the media wanted to talk about was his birth certificate he complained but he doesn't learn cos another one of their babies/sideshows is that black man and his white woman. Oh, the horror. The thought of some lunatic like this making Joe Biden president keeps me up @ night. The lunatic I'm referring to is (of course) the Obamanation. But this other one is just as scary, the "sign language" guy I mean this time. The "selfie" shows what an idiot the Obamanation is, the "interpreter" shows what a crooked incompetent basket case the RSA gov't is. If it wasn't for the excellent infrastructure bequeathed to them & the considerable mineral wealth to cushion the blow, the S. African would all be starving now.

This fake interpreter is a good example of how ANC organized it poorly, he was so ignorant which means a plenty of money he earned, and humiliating Deaf children all over the world. We, the department of ASL and Deaf Studies (Vancouver, Canada) will use this video to educate hearing students to understand why we, Deaf people have always been oppressed, exploited, and humiliated. It is a wake-up call! Luckily Obama was not being assassinated!
