Sudan’s Bashir reaches out to south ahead of vote
Sudan’s Omar al-Bashir has made a rare visit to the south of the country ahead of a crucial independence referendum.
A vote for separation between north and south on Sunday is seen as a foregone conclusion. Bashir has vowed to respect the result.
Speaking after talks with the south’s leader, Salva Kiir, the president appeared conciliatory.
“We talked about questions to be settled after the referendum, including the border. We agree that dialogue is the only way to resolve all the problems,” Bashir said.
