The Exchange: Will we be hailing taxis from the sky by 2025?

Published

on

There are few things more frustrating than being stuck in a traffic jam. Just five minutes of standstill during rush hour can get you dreaming of flying cars like the ones from the 1960s cartoon ‘The Jetsons’. But could these cars soon be a reality?

Flying cars sound like something out of a science fiction film, but money is pouring into the development of human-sized drones and cargo-carrying airships. Will flying taxis soon be stopping outside our doors?

According to IBA, a company that provides aviation data and analytics for aviation finance and airlines, the market for these Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft is expected to rise to over 21 billion euros by 2035. It’s a figure keeping investors with their eyes in the sky.

More than 50 firms are currently developing several prototype aircraft with the capacity to transport up to 20 passengers. One such company is the Turkish start-up AirCar.

The first birdstrike or minor failure with catastrophic consequences will highlight the stupidity of "hanging on the prop(s)" to use an old aviation expression -meaning that if the power stops you are dead. There are ways to sensibly introduce 'urban' air travel but not like a scaled up toy drone.

The question is, will it be hailing taxis!

3D tools , C# and C++ and Electric Motors / Batteries / Composites experience is what really matters for EU Youth to learn , to be able to build Augmented Reality , Holograms Projections and VTOL Drones, video games and e-commerce sites. What will EU do to get there ?

The Italian justice minister is facing calls for her resignation after admitting she used her influence to get the daughter of a high profile businessman out of prison.

Anna Maria Cancellieri says she stepped in out of concern for the health of Giulia Ligresti who has anorexia and anxiety.

Ligresti had been arrested along with her father and sister during an investigation into false accounting at insurer Fondiaria SAI which her family controlled until last year.

When asked by a journalist why she had intervened, Cancellieri replied: “I did it because a prisoner could have died. Let me be clear about this. If she had died, what would have happened?Tell me – who would have been responsible? Or maybe because someone has a well-known name they aren’t treated the same. Aren’t we all equal before the law?”

The scandal broke after La Repubblica newspaper published the transcript of a tapped phone conversation where Cancellieri told the Ligestri family “you can count on me.”

Cancellieri has a long-standing friendship with the Ligestri family. Her son earned several million euros as an executive working for Fondiaria SAI, fuelling accusations of a conflict of interest.

The opposition 5-star movement says it will put forward a no-confidence motion against her.

If Cancellieri does quit it will be a blow for Prime Minister Letta’s already fragile left-right coalition.
