Unexploded bombs: Will the Black Sea face the same fate as the Baltic?

Published

June 21, 2024

Called “ticking time bombs,” millions of tonnes of unexploded munitions and other relics of WWII lie at the bottom of all our European seas. In an attempt to demilitarise Europe, around 40,000 tonnes of chemical weapons were dumped into the Baltic Sea alone, according to HELCOM.

Today, the war in Ukraine is threatening the Black Sea once again, exacerbating an already complicated situation.

In this episode of Ocean Calls, Euronews science reporter Jeremy Wilks and his guests will discuss the complicated legacy of WWII and explore whether we can help save the Black Sea or at least make future clean-up efforts a bit easier to manage.

At the end of the episode, you’ll hear a mysterious tale of the oldest and best-preserved shipwreck ever found, thanks to the unique properties of the Black Sea.

Eurozone trade rises

Published

November 4, 2026

euronews

http://www.euronews.com/ Trade volumes for the eurozone rose in the first six months of this year according to the latest EU figures.

Exports were up by eight percent from the same period last year while imports rose two percent.

That reflects relatively weak domestic demand for goods.

The region’s trade surplus swung from a deficit of 23 billion euros in the first half of last year to a surplus of 26.2 billion.

Analysts said that was a clear sign that austerity and structural economic reforms are working.

In Europe, politicians not in the mainstream, from the anti-establishment to the far right, are hoping to benefit from the success of Donald Trump or learn from his approach.

The far right in the Netherlands is convinced the wave that has taken Trump to the White House is also crossing the Atlantic.

Geert Wilders, leader of the far-right Dutch Freedom Party (PVV), said: “Yesterday showed – and that is what I will tell my voters – that everything is possible and this will not stop, you see the …
