Brussels standoff: EU stalemate over Hungary and Poland budget veto

There’s been no breakthrough in Brussels over Europe’s long-term budget and pandemic rescue package. The EU leaders’ summit ended without a deal – after Hungary and Poland vetoed the financial plan earlier this week. They say they won’t sign off on the so-called “rule of law mechanism” that links the funding to countries upholding democratic norms. But the European Parliament is refusing to back down.
