Russian director Lyubimov dies aged 97

The founder of Russia’s renowned Taganka Theatre, director Yuri Lyubimov has died at the age of 97.

Born before the 1917 revolution, Lyubimov began directing avant-garde theatre productions in the 1960s.

He went on to win worldwide recognition for his hugely visual and inventive shows.

He was exiled for several years in the 1980s after criticising cultural restrictions in the Soviet Union.
