The US and South Korea continued to hold joint military exercises in Pohang on Monday as the North conducted live-fire drills and Seoul fired shells at North Korean waters in response.

According to South Korean officials the planned drills by Pyongyang come after an increase in threatening rhetoric and a series of rocket and ballistic missile launches in an apparent protest against annual military exercises by Seoul and Washington.

The Ssang Yong exercise is part of annual exercises between the US and South Korea which started last Thursday and is scheduled to run until April 7.

More than 200 South Korean Marines and 1,000 Navy are be participating, with 7,500 US Marines and 2,000 Navy.

The exercises, which are reported to be the biggest by the US and South Korea since 1993, come at a time of growing tension with the North.
