CDU’s put positive spin on Berlin defeat
Germany’s ruling centre-right coalition has suffered its sixth election defeat this year yet Angela Merkel’s CDU believes it can still celebrate.
In the Berlin regional poll her conservatives took just over 23% but significantly the Left party vote collapsed forcing the SPD winners to find a new partner.
Frank Henkel of the CDU said:” Ladies and gentlemen, my friends – today is a day of success for the CDU in Berlin. We have achieved our primary objective in the campaign: the Red-Red coalition is no longer in the majority in our capital.”
