Waves crashing into Taiwan’s northern coastline have acted as an early warning sign that Typhoon Soulik is on its way. The storm is scheduled to hit the area on Friday afternoon.
Forecasters said the typhoon had weakened overnight but the winds were still peaking at 173 kilometres per hour.
Hundreds of soldiers are on stand-by and around 100 military camps in place as emergency shelters, said officials. Personal preparations were underway as well, as local fisherwoman Dan Yong explained.
“We are preparing for the typhoon, taking a day off, tying everything up. What else can you do? If things are blown away there’s nothing we can do.”
From Taiwan Typhoon Soulik is expected to hit mainland China’s eastern provinces on Saturday heaping more problems on the country.
Separately, floods and mudslides have already devastated swathes of the southwest Sichuan province. Torrential rain battered the area for several days. Near the city of Deyang a factory collapsed with five workers reported to be missing.
Local authorities in the eastern provinces have been told to implement emergency response plans in preparation for Typhoon Soulik.
Such storms are common during the summer in parts of East Asia where conditions enable tropical cyclones to form.
