French-Polish director Roman Polanski has set his sight on the top prize with ‘Venus in Fur’. He last won the prize in 2002 for the semi-autobiographical ‘The Pianist’ about the Warsaw ghetto. This year he explores the relationship between director and actor, with his wife Emmanuelle Seigner taking the lead.
Euronews correspondent Frédéric Ponsard reports direct from the red carpet:
“The screenings are now over, the 20 films have all been shown to the jury and voting has begun. This year was the selection was very balanced and many films have a chance at clinching the Palme d’Or: Venus in Fur by Roman Polanski, A Touch of Sin by Jia Zhang Ke or Inside Llewyn Davis by the Coen brothers. Among the outsiders: La Grande Bellezza by Paolo Sorrentino and La vie d’Adèle by Abdellatif Kechiche.”
‘La Vie d’Adele’, or ‘Blue is the Warmest Colour’ has critics falling over themselves to praise its depiction of an intimate love story between two women.
It is being called the revelation of the Festival, putting it in good stead to sweep the board for its director and two leading ladies.
American director Jim Jarmusch has offered up a tale of retro-cool vampire love, with ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’. Starring indie favourite Tilda Swinton, Jarmusch joked that he made a film starring supernatural bloodsuckers after hearing you could make a lot of money with them.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has announced that the foreign ministry will handle talks with world powers on the country’s nuclear programme.
The move appears to be an attempt to improve diplomatic relations after years of what the West has considered a hardline Iranian stance.
There have been indications that Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif could either lead the negotiating team or appoint another foreign ministry official.
He is seen as a moderate politician and has experience living in and negotiating with the West. Zarif was previously Iran’s envoy to the United Nations.
No date has been set for the resumption of talks between Iran and the group of six western nations on the issue of the country’s nuclear programme. They have demanded that Tehran cease uranium enrichment.
Nuclear expects have said that Rouhani’s move could bring more flexibility from Iran, however warned that a quick deal on the decade-old dispute was unlikely.
