The Qatar World Cup in 2022 will not be staged in the summer. FIFA, football’s governing body, has ruled out a June or July tournament when temperatures can reach 35 – 45 degrees Celsius.
The news comes more than three years after Qatar was awarded the World Cup. In October FIFA said it was setting up a consultation process to decide when the finals should be played.
FIFA’s secretary general Jerome Valcke in the surprise announcement said the matches would probably be scheduled between November 15 and January 15 at the latest.
“If you play between November 15 and, let’s say, the end of
December, it’s the time when the weather is the most favourable,” Valcke added.
“You play with a temperature equivalent to that of a rather hot spring in Europe, you play with a temperature of 25 degrees (Celsius), which is perfect to play football.”
The tournament lasts for 30 days but FIFA allows two full months for it in the international match calendar.
FIFA stipulates that players who are selected for their national teams play their last club games some three weeks before the start of the competition. Players would also require at least one week to recover afterwards.
