Rare footage: Volcano “Big Ben” erupts on remote, Subantarctic island

Rare footage captured by scientists on board a research vessel from Australia’s federal government scientific research institute, shows an eruption of the Big Ben volcano on Heard Island, an Australian territory in the Subantarctic.

The Big Ben volcano includes the 2,745-meter-tall Mawson Peak.

Big Ben is known to have erupted at least three other times since 2000, but the remote nature of the volcano means that eruptions are usually only captured by satellite imagery.
