euronews science – UK researchers become ant-tag-onists
http://www.euronews.com/ Scientists in the UK are taking a super-small approach to solving a big puzzle on the Longshaw Estate in the Peak District.
They want to know more about the northern hairy wood ant, an insect close to being threatened as a species.
So researchers from the University of York are fitting tiny radio tags to a thousand ants to find out how they communicate and travel among their complex nests.
The three year research project is a world first.
Experts carefully glue a one millimetre radio chip to each ant, insisting that the insects are not harmed in any way.
“The interesting thing about ants is that each individual ant is rather stupid, but together they do all these amazing and complicated behaviours,” explained Sam Ellis, a biologist at the University of York. “The key is to understand what very simple rules can you give an individual ant, but then when these, when they all interact, they do these complicated things. And these tags will hopefully help give information about this, because you can say this ant is doing this, this ant is doing this, and when they interact together, this happens. You can start to build up a picture.”
The tags act something like a supermarket bar-code, triggering monitors when the ant passes by pre-set sensors.
Researchers can examine how ants communicate with each other in their colonies, which are connected by a network of ant motorways.
Multiple ant queens live among several nests.
Scientists hope that the research project will not only shed light on the wood ants’ behaviour, but will also help to conserve them for the future.
Understanding more about them may ultimately keep this protected species off the endangered list.

Nokia promises more cost cuts
http://www.euronews.com/ Struggling mobile phone maker Nokia has promised it’ll make more, substantial cost cuts after reporting a slightly bigger than expected loss in the first three months of the year. Details of the cuts have yet to be revealed.
Its sales chief is also to leave next month as the sales team is restructured.
The Finnish company said its operating loss was 1.34 billion euros, compared to a 439 million euro profit in the same period last year.
The net loss was 929 million euros from a net profit a year ago of 344 million euros.
Nokia said sales of its new Lumia phones have been mixed as it struggles to compete with smartphone rivals Apple and Samsung.
Chief Executive Stephen Elop said: “We exceeded expectations in markets including the United States, but establishing momentum in certain markets including the UK has been more challenging.”

Blackberry blues
http://www.euronews.com/ BlackBerry smartphone maker Research In Motion has suffered a devastating setback.
In a move that has the markets questioning its ability to survive the Canadian company has delayed the launch of its next-generation phones until next year so missing both the back-to-school and Christmas shopping periods.
The revamped BlackBerry 10 devices are regarded as make-or-break for the once-dominant technology firm.
Its sales have crumbled in the face of competition from Apple’s iPhone and handsets using Google Android software.
RIM’s shares tumbled as it also reported a steeper-than-expected quarterly operating loss and announced it would slash 5,000 jobs, or nearly a third of its workforce.
The size of the loss, its first in eight years, and the likelihood that sales will keep sliding into next year reinforce the impression of a company in terminal decline.
Industry observers were shocked at the extent of the problems despite years of delayed and uninspiring products, service outages and other embarrassments for RIM.
“It’s like watching a puppy die. It’s terrible,” said analyst Matthew Thornton of Avian Securities in Boston.
“Wow, what a disaster,” said Edward Snyder, managing director of Charter Equity Research in San Francisco. RIM is now in “a handset death spiral,” he said. “From a numbers point of view, it could hardly be worse, and it’s going to deteriorate from here,” he said.
“There’s really no guarantee that once they come out on the other side of BlackBerry 10 that it’s going to be something that people will want,” said Eric Jackson, a hedge fund manager at Ironfire Capital in Toronto.
