The trial in Turkey over a longstanding conflict between the secularist movement and Turkish premier Tayyip Erdogan’s government has brought a number of demonstrators out in support of those awaiting verdicts, despite a ban on protests.

Demonstrators chanted ‘Everywhere is Taksim, everywhere is resistance’, in reference to the rallies that started in Istanbul’s Gezi Park, sparking national anti-government protests in the city’s Taksim Square and elsewhere.

State authorities deployed troops and barricades around the Silivri detention centre near Istanbul where the defendants are held.

Muharrem Ince from the Republican People’s Party, Turkey’s main opposition party was highly critical: “This trial is the one whose tribunal is special, witnesses are secret, and evidence is fake. Imagine a trial whose prosecutor is the prime minister (Tayyip Erdogan).”

Over the weekend, police raids were launched on the Worker’s Party, a TV station and the Turkish Youth Union, which had earlier called for a protest outside the courthouse over the so-called ‘Ergenekon’ investigation.
