Bradley Manning has been back in court for the start of his sentencing hearing which could take several weeks.
The US Army Private at the centre of the intelligence leak which rocked America was acquitted on Tuesday of aiding the enemy but convicted of 20 charges including espionage.
Both the prosecution and defence will now call witnesses, perhaps more than a dozen, as they argue over his punishment.
During his trial Manning did not testify in his own defence but he could still take the stand during the sentencing phase.
