Despite freezing temperatures thousands of pro-Europe demonstrators have kept up their demands for Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych to resign.

They appear to have been spurred on by the solidarity between diverse opposition leaders and the violence meted out during the weekend’s clashes.

Oleh Tyahnybok, leader of the Svoboda party addressed the crowds:

“We call for the impeachment of the president! For the resignation of the government! For criminal proceedings against those who raised their hand against our innocent children!”

But the opposition leaders were speaking to smaller crowds than had been seen in Kyiv city centre 24 hours before.

“I cannot do a thing alone ,” said Vitaly Klitschko, leader of his Udar party. “The three of us together won’t be able to make a difference but when we are 10, 20, 30, 100, 100,000, 1,000,000, they (the government) won’t be able to do anything.”

The country has been plunged into crisis by President Yanukovych’s decision to forgo a free trade deal with Europe under Russian pressure.

While the pro-Europe demonstrators continue their occupation of Kyiv City Hall, their allies in parliament have called for a vote of no confidence over what they see as a lurch back towards Soviet-style rule from Moscow.
