The Afghan Taliban has announced its opened an office in Qatar to help restart talks on ending the 12-year-old war.
Speaking at a news conference its representative Mohammed Naeem said the Islamist insurgency wanted a political solution that would bring a just government and end foreign occupation. It also wants good relations with Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries, Naeem added.
US officials will meet with the Taliban next week in Doha for talks aimed at achieving peace. Washington insists that the Taliban breaks ties with al-Qaeda and accepts the Afghan constitution.
