Water cannon battle: China, Vietnam ships clash in oil rig standoff
A Vietnamese patrol vessel on Monday (May 12) hit back at
Chinese ships after being attacked with water cannons and
blocked from approaching an oil rig recently stationed by
Beijing in the disputed South China Sea, state media reported.
Tensions rose in the resource-rich South China Sea last week after China positioned a giant oil rig in an area also claimed by Vietnam. Each country accused the other of ramming its ships near the disputed Paracel
Islands.
