Police in Washington DC fought to control widespread panic close to the White House and Capitol Hill after a gunman went on a shooting rampage at a nearby navy base.

Thirteen people were killed and around 14 others injured when the shooter opened fire and had gun battles with armed officers.

Witness Terry Durham described her narrow escape:

“He was far enough down the hall that we couldn’t see his face but we could see him with the rifle and he raised and aimed at us and fired and he hit high on the wall just as we were trying to leave.”

The FBI have identified a suspect who is among the dead as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, a former Navy Reservist and military contractor.

The shooting rattled the US capital inducing a lockdown in the area with people being told to stay indoors as police searched for a possible second suspect.

Euronews correspondent Stefan Grobe who was in Washington said:

“The shooting represents the worst loss of life in a single incident in Washington in more than 30 years. Officials said they still do not know of a motive, but they do not have any evidence to think that it was related to terrorism.”
