Search teams in Lampedusa pulled 38 more bodies from the wreck of the sunken migrant boat on Monday – bringing the death toll to 232.

Divers can only stay on the sea bed for a few minutes at a time. Dozens of corpses remain inside what has become an underwater cemetery.

Over 300 people are feared drowned. For the mainly Eritrean and Somali victims, any steps now taken by Italy or the EU will be too little, too late.

From a migrant who reached Lampedusa on the day the boat sank, comes a warning to others not to set off from Libya, its starting point.

“I participated,” said 24-year-old Natnael from Eritrea. “But I would like to advise the people who are in Libya. I would like to tell them, you know, it is not a good way, you know. It is better to get another chance, another option.”

And the reward for those rescued from the doomed boat at the end of their harrowing journey? Under Italian law, they face criminal charges, repatriation and a 5,000 euro fine.
