‘Serious but stable’ remains the only news on Nelson Mandela’s condition. Officials are yet to provide an update on the former South African president’s condition, stoking concern in South Africa.

Reporters outside the hospital noted that relatives visiting him on Sunday appeared in a positive mood.

The 94-year-old is suffering from a lung infection, and it is the fourth time he has been hospitalised since December.

“He has been frequently in hospital now and this time, right in the middle of winter and all that. All of us should be worried,” explained Seth Mazibuko, Mandela’s friend and leader of the 1976 student uprising in Soweto.

A hero of the anti-apartheid movement, Mandela is believed to have damaged his lungs while working in a prison quarry. Though he retired from public life in 2004, his popularity hasn’t diminished.

“Mandela is always in our prayers, we wish him a speedy recovery and we love him a lot,” said one young Johannesburg resident.
