Barack Obama’s first trip to Berlin as president was portrayed as a visit between friends. Both country’s leading families appeared to get along well – even the rarely seen husband of Chancellor Angela Merkel joined in.

Using the anniversary of the JFK Cold War address, the scene was set at the Brandenburg Gate for a grand gesture.

And under a hot sun Obama called for a cut in US and Russian nuclear weapons:

“After a comprehensive review, I can determine that we can ensure the security of America and our allies and maintain a strong and credible strategic return, while reducing our deployed strategic nuclear weapons by up to one-third. And, I intend to seek negotiated cuts with Russia to move beyond cold war nuclear postures.”

Paying respects to the fallen at the Berlin wall was a must and the presence of Obama’s wife and daughters provided a well received photo opportunity.
