According to Hairstylist Guido Palau, “The clothes are sort of super rich and gorgeous so I really needed, wanted to downplay the girl and make her edgy, make her more punky. It’s sort of like spindly, kind of like wispy hair,” he says. He shapes hair underneath the band and leaves in tons of product to make it hard. “All the things you’re not meant to do.”

Dick Page, the makeup artist backstage, describes the look as “a little bit tough on the eye” with blue and black and just before they go out, he puts in some grease on top of the blue/black so it has an inky, wet, shiny finish to them. The lip has a bit more red inside, almost as if it’s been bitten. “We can get away with making the eyebrow more stronger than usual because they have the bands,” he says.

Nathalie Rykiel, daughter of Sonia Rykiel and current president and artistic director at Sonia Rykiel. “It’s very playful. It’s about the spirit of Sonia, the French Parisian nonchalance, and a contrast with a very structured, tailored suit with impeccable clothes.” The brand’s clothing are certainly much more structured than we’ve seen in the past, but there’s still an essence of French Rykiel fashion and playfulness. Lots of knits here, but they were oversimplified in a different way from what we’re used to at Rykiel. There was also Japanese jersey and fur. The colors came out later. At the end, in signature Sonia Rykiel style, the girls come out as a group laughing and having a great time.
