According to some analysts, Ireland ranks as one of the richest countries in the world, with a GDP per capita higher than Luxembourg and Switzerland. In fact, its impressive growth in the final quarter of 2022 single-handedly kept the Eurozone out of recession. In this video, we’ll look at Ireland’s impressive GDP figures, how it achieved rapid economic growth, and whether we can actually trust the data.

The claims that Ireland has boomed as a result of as a result of being a low tax economy fail to recognise that these corporate arrangements provide very little employment or income gains to Irish workers (this isn't a defence of UK economic policy you understand).

They provide massive benefits to multi-national corporations who can spread production out into low-wage nations where workers have very little protections or rights, while recording the income gains and value of IP etc in Ireland as a result of generous conditions provided by the Irish government.

Even before the GFC, we knew that around 20 per cent of the Irish GDP income was just ‘profit transfers’ to foreign owned companies that provided virtually zero benefits to the Irish people.

Net factor income is the difference between the income flows accruing to Irish residents as a result of investments abroad and the incomes flows from Ireland to foreigners.

In 2022, they represented 29.3 per cent of total GDP income produced – nearly a third of GDP – which was flowing out of Ireland to enrich wealthy foreign interests, who had exploited the tax-haven rules.

It's all fake, Ireland has simply become another tax haven for international corrupt businesses to engage in money laundering through, the Irish government must be fully aware that they are enabling international fiscal crime, but don't really care

Ireland is not rich. We are now officially in recession thanks to the dip in the Pharma exports.
We are in 226 billion in debt, the third most in debt/broke country in the world with seven corporations and an illegal international tax loophole literally keeping us alive.

Ireland was one of the P.I.G.S. countries 'Portigal. Ireland, Greece and Spain', that was bailed out by the other nations in the EU after the banks crashed in 2009. Have they paid that back yet? A crash like 'Enron', is just around every corner….

If they were still using GNP it wouldn’t be as high because GDP counts money made by foreigners in that country but that wealth goes out of the country it’s deceptive GNP didn’t and that’s why they switched to GDP from GNP national product means business owed by citizens domestic product means it was made there but could be owned by foreigners.

Ireland wasn't de-industrialised under British rule it just never industrialised. Not because of any political action by Britain but because of an absence of good reserves of steam coal. Every British industrial area the North East, West Yorkshire, Lancashire, the West Midlands, the Clyde basin sat on top of coal deposits that were easy to exploit. If they were not already on the coast they also had good seaports within reasonable distances. It's no accident that Belfast Ireland's most industrialised city was a good harbour just a short distance from the river Clyde and it's coal mines.
The first British canals and railways were built to transport coal transporting other goods and people was very much an afterthought . No coal, no canals, no railways no peripheral industries.
Ireland actually had a good canal system at the turn of the 18th century but it served the main agricultural areas and was designed to move agricultural produce.

Couple of bumps along the way since the Celtic Tiger, like the country going bankrupt and getting bailed out by the Troika, that's quite an important detail to gloss over!

It's a tax heaven for multinationals. Why the FATF hasn't picked up on it yet is astonishing. They put Malta on the grey list for money supposed laundering.
Adam Tooze recently wrote that in a longer-term analysis of euro zone growth it was necessary to exclude the Irish figures as “they are spectacularly distorted by its role as an offshore tax haven”.

The Irish government doesn't use GDP in Ireland to measure the wealth of it's people so why does this video? Lol. It still is one of the highest nations by every metric however and has the 8th highest standard of living in the world. Above other developed nations like the UK, US, France, New Zealand etc

I spent one year in Ireland, 2004, for work…, I can confirm everything you say …

  32. @taintabird23

    February 16, 2024 at 5:04 am

This is a rehash of the same old news. The following is also the case:

    According to a recent article in the FT, the poorest 20% in Ireland are 63% better off than the poorest 20% in the UK;

Life expectancy is much higher in Ireland than in most countries, including the United States or Northern Ireland

Personal savings in Ireland are much higher than in other EU countries and Ireland still has many more McDonalds restaurants than food banks, unlike across the Irish Sea.

In 2021, Household Debt in Switzerland was 131% of GDP; it was 119% in Norway; 86% in the UK; 78% in the US; 56% in Germany but only 30% in Ireland.

Economic inequality, high in Ireland 20 years ago, is now the lowest in the OECD.
