Despite being NATO allies Greece and Turkey have traditionally had bad neighbourly relations, thanks to unresolved maritime disputes, the status of Aegean islands, Cyprus and more. But recently, something appears to have changed, and Turkey and Greece appear to be in good spirits once again; but what changed, and why?

About Turky. A huge unpleasant settlement, a gypsy dump-bazaar, into which turks once turned a Greek/Roman city. Absolutely uncomfortable, fussy “city”, with crap and gypsies all around. Agressive. All the best that Turkey has got from the Greeks, the gene pool in western part to architecture

we have no problem with greek people. I dont get why the west makes it a big deal. Just regular political tension which a lot of neighbor countries have. EU isolating itself from Turkey increases this tenison tho.

The west is fading and the east is rising. Turkey has a very bright future, while Greece has a bleak one, especially if it remains in the European camp. Greece has always been the second class citizen in the eyes of western Europeans. It looks like that within a few years time EU will be completely bankrupt at best or destroyed and thrashed at worst. EU is already near bankruptcy in economical and moral terms. Already some eastern European countries are looking for an escape route. Hungary for instance is developing strong ties with Turkey and they use their Turkic origins in order to open up to Asia. Greeks are slower in the pace but still can feel what lays ahead and fervently try to mend bridges with Turkey. The body language of Greek administration was one of diplomatic humility and servitude during the last visit of Turkish President (aka the Sultan) in Athens. Famous Greek Turkologist Dimitri Kitsikis is the god-father of HellonoTurkism. The cultural and political ideology based on the civilizational phenomenon, aiming at establishing a Hellenic-Turkish political ensemble, national, and cultural identity. The ideology supports that both nations and peoples share similar cultures, traditions, histories, and also a mixed genetic similarity. The belief is that such a unification would create a new global, regional, military and economic power, which would also peacefully resolve ongoing disputes between the Cypriot, Greek, and Turkish states and communities such as the Cyprus problem, the Aegean problems, and also Maritime-border disputes in the Mediterranean. This idea actually comes from re-creating an amalgam of both the Byzantium and Ottoman Empires. It is interesting to say the least, but personally I have some reservations. Turkey is a much more powerful country in population, economics, industry and military compared to the junior Greece. Once the Western hegemony recedes (which is inevitable), there could possibly be a broader Mediterranean economic, cultural and military pact between the regional countries, which would include the Balkans, Greece, Hungary, Cyprus, some Caucasian countries and Egypt/Maghreb countries in the East. I assume Turkey being the most powerful partner, will lead this union and the center of power will be the great city of Istanbul (similar to what Brussels is for the EU today). Countries in the union will have their administrative autonomy but act in unison in global affairs.

Because US is forcing unilateraly the weak, corrupt, appeasement minded Greek politicians (rejected by 80% of the electorate body at National elections) to sit in a negotiating table where the only thing that will be compromised will be the Greeks sovereign rights on territorial waters and the its Exclusive Economic Zone as outlined By International Law

  12. @user-wg2de2wr2d

    February 16, 2024 at 2:01 pm

As a Greek I have no problem with the open-minded, not brainwashed Turks!

I will open the doors of my house for them and I will help them in their need!

But I have a problem with all the Turks that they dream a new larger Turkey,

to the borders of their heart, as Erdogan once said,

covering the area of the long dead Ottoman Empire!

It in unforgivable in these troubled times that we live in,

Erdogan to threat Greece with war because he wants to expand Turkey
and become the next Kemal in the Turkish history!

One man’s dream CANNOT and WILL NOT become the nightmare of the Greek & Turkish people!!!

    February 16, 2024 at 2:01 pm

The truth is that Erdogan seems to express threats . From the other side… its time to accept and be happy with what we have as countries and become strong allies. History is a great lesson and there id definitely no tension needed , especially between people which we share many commodities.

  16. @Seventh7Art

    February 16, 2024 at 2:01 pm

Τhis is all a theatrical show. There is no relationship repairing going on. The official position of Turkey is that the Republic of Cyprus does not exist (!), the Greek islands, at least 100 of them, should belong to Turkey, Greek islands are the only islands in the world without Exclusive Economic Zone (!!!), there is also the official Warning for War if Greece applies International Law of the Seas to extend its territorial waters beyond 6 nautical miles and many other irrational, unacceptable and ludicrous Turkish claims, officially stated by the Turkish government. Stop saying, oh I hope this and I hope that…. Reality check versus "hopes" and wishful thinking, is what I suggest that you all do.

NO !!! Since nothing has changed !!
Since Turkey still has a casus belli against Greece over the 12 miles issue.
Since nothing has changed over the obsurb demands on EEZ matters.
Since nothing has changed over The Cyprus problem.
Since nothing has changed over the demand of demilitarization of the Greek islands !!
Therefore I am sure that Erdo at a given time will bring up those issues again !!

As someone interested in Middle East and European geography, this is really something that needs to happen. Despite decades of conflict, these two countries are able to become allies if they can come to some sort of territorial agreement.

Yo fellow Greeks lets be friends, look at all this shitty war going on around us. If we strengthen relations and trade we'd be a powerhouse in the region. Plus a majority of our traditions are the same on a person to person level, we're pretty much identical in a lot of aspects. Shit happened in the past for both sides, lets hash the beef and get on with our lives.

  25. @rebornof

    February 16, 2024 at 2:01 pm

If countries authority haven't sign any agreements you can't force them any rules. i mean't 12 miles. There is only 1 sign between countries, thats 3 miles. Today both sides accept 6 miles without any signments between them.

  26. @ahmetdagdelen6180

    February 16, 2024 at 2:01 pm

Why Turkey and Greece are Repairing Relations ? Becauase Erdoğan is out of money and try to show the westerns that Turkey shows peace 🙂
I dont want to be negative but ı dont belive the relations will be better. Also wont be worse. As long as two nations like to blame each other this conflict wont change.

  27. @ahmetdagdelen6180

    February 16, 2024 at 2:01 pm

Turkey and greece did not agreed on 6 miles as i know. The agreement was 3 miles but when greece maade it up to 6 turkey also declarate as 6 which is not a deal by two sides but just self declarations. But turkey made a mistake about it. Because of the georaphy when greece make it form 3 to 6 they gain 4 or 5 times more than turkey. Because the geographic positions with every same mile for both countries greece gain more than turkey.

    February 16, 2024 at 2:01 pm

as a citizen of both, last thing i expect (and want) from either country is a war despite numerous conflicts that WILL continue to happen. They are playing a weird game as being both allies and enemies at the same time.
To me it seems like both nations' general population love each other, it is the governments that do stupid shit. Also turks and greeks might have closest cultures in the world despite being 2 seperate nations and adopting different religions for most of the population. We lived and learned together in the past, and created a unified culture that got divided by politics.

We hate englishmen much more than their puppets, hmm.. sorry greek friend i didn'T mean for you meant for the guys in time of WW1 ok. i am not one of the men who occupied and wanted to supress your freedom wish in 19th cc, i never fight against a nation who wants freedom ok.
