Its best to be careful at this time. What will happen to the Russian economy and markets remains a mystery. There seems to be more negative portfolios this 2nd half of 2023 with markets tumbling, soaring inflation, and banks going out of business. My concern is how can the rapid interest-rate hike be of favor to a value investor, or is it better avoiding stocks for a while?

The ignorance of these commentators is beyond belief, trotting out their opinions without giving a moment’s thought to what they are saying. Saying sanctions take some time to work. Russia has been sanctioned for a hundred years how much longer do we have to wait before they take effect. Cuba, a very poor country, has been sanctioned for 70 years yet manages to provide free education and health care.

Its not surprising.
Russia has been throwing out massive amounts of Money to raise War Production.
While actual Production of Consumer Goods has dropped in some Areas by up to 70%.
Meaning that People are Slowly Noticing that there is massive amounts of Money in Circulation. But barely anything to Buy for that Money.
Russia is actually managing this quite effectively right now.
Propaganda is currently keeping the worst Effects at Bay as People simply dont know how Bad it actually is. And thus Inflation only rises Slowly.
If not for Russia being extremely Effective at Propaganda and Suppression of the Population. They would already be looking at Hyperinflation because Russia is still Spending massively while Production is Dropping further.
@helenrushful
February 17, 2024 at 12:58 pm
That drop in April was a complete anomaly and almost certainly fabricated. In reality I’m sure inflation is as high as it was last year, and growing. Not least because they are far from self-sufficient, they rely heavily on imports. A good example: caviar, Russian caviar is skyrocketing because they can’t import fish food to feed the fish !

I think not tying your currency of strong resources like oil and gold is really a balancing factor. Unless they find tons of gold and oil or produce gold and oil in lab cheaply.
Unless ofcourse Russia printing too much or importing borrowing too much.
You can only buy in roubles and rupees now so as long as Russia keeps selling oil and metals its no problem.
If there's too much foreign companies also can cause inflation as they draw the money out of your country if you pay in roubles but if in usd nothing only affects the USD.
@JamesSmith-ix5jd
February 17, 2024 at 12:58 pm
You are comparing our inflation with EU's and US'? That's already a badge of honor, inflation of 7-8% is very typical for Russia, it only becomes abnormal above 10%, Russia never in its modern hystory had 3-4% inflation.
