When the Nova Kakhovka Dam blew up, both sides blamed the other for the destruction. But in this video, we break down why it was almost definitely Russia, and why this could end up being one of Russia’s worst strategic blunders in the war so far.

    CORRECTIONS:

At 6:44, we say that 'for most of the war, Russia refrained from striking civilian targets'. Of course, this isn't true: Russia has been striking civilian targets since the war began in February of last year, as we covered on this channel. What we were trying to communicate is that there was a significant uptick in Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure (bridges, railways and the electricity grid) in October of last year, when Russia changed its command after the successful Ukrainian counteroffensives in Kherson and Kharkiv, and this latest attack on Nova Kakhovka suggests a further escalation in this direction. Nonetheless, this is an error on our part, and we can only apologise – it's a sloppy mistake.

At 2:30, we say that Kherson city is 'occupied by the Ukrainians'. Again, this is just a mistake – we meant to say 'controlled', but apparently got a little confused having used the word 'occupied' in the context of its Russian occupation so many times previously.

At the end of this video, and in other videos, where we refer to Russia's "Special Military Operation" we intend the reference to be tongue in cheek. I think previously that's been pretty well understood, but we totally see that based on tone it's possible to misinterpret our intention here. To avoid any confusion going forward, we plan to refrain from using the phrase (even mockingly)

Finally, some commenters have pushed back against our suggestion that the Russians were behind this, and likened it to the NordStream pipeline attacks last year. We're not going to go into this in too much detail, but the two cases are clearly not analogous for a whole load of reasons (as we explain here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBArIp0Gy7g )

These are sloppy errors that we shouldn't be making, and we can only apologise – hopefully you still found the video informative

Russia is not getting on to well in its attack on ukraine, if fact they were in a better position militarily before they demonstrated to the world that the " BEAR " had no claws , which is a dangerous position to be in , to save face they can not back down , and go home , while putin is pulling the strings , ..the puppet master can not afford to back down , our only hope of a peaceful solution is for putin to be " neutralised " and a new leader to face reality, and withdraw back to their territory, their fate is in their own hands ,

Long story short, Russia undoubtly had the dam rigged up months and months ago, but CIA hacked detonators and had the thing blow up without doing a thing.

I will never understand the pro russian comments. Putin made everything worst for everyone on Earth for bullshit reasons, so what's in it for you? The loss of life, the supply chain disruption, the ecological disasters, the rising tensions, the massive disinformation operations, what's in it for YOU?
Do you crave this hard to believe in something, are you so little that you fall for any nationalistic narrative that comes around?
Maybe it's time to grow up and start focusing on what really matters, don't you think? Like making the world a better, peaceful place instead of an open graveyard?

Thid has to be the most biased channel out there. It is always 'Russia bad, Ukraine good' nonsense without any nuance.

Not saying Ukraine did it, but there is arguments both ways. Why would Russia flood their own territory, their own power plant, their own defences. They didn't even move huge arms depots out of the way…

Wonder, why then ukraine collected more water on dams above this one and as soon as itcwas blown they let more water go down the stream causing more flood? Intersting!

I also like the arguments of the author reffering to ukrainan telegram chanels. I wonder if they wouldnt like to give false information, especially, its so easy to make up a name of an unknown "russian soldier" and bring him as an evidence. Very unprofessional , shame to the author.

  14. @VL-inquisitor

    February 19, 2024 at 3:28 am

Everyone is missing an important clue that exposes the real culprit. That is, the water level in the reservior had been rising abormally in weeks just before the explosion (and I meant it, it was ABNORMALLY high). So, who is in control of the upstream dams. Answering this question will give you the prime suspect.

To flood the downstream areas in Kherson to deter the Ukranian counteroffensive, Russia could have just opened the floodgates instead of blowing them up. Likewise, Russia could have shut the gas supply (which it already did) instead of destroying the Nord Stream pipes completely.

  15. @lidiay1

    February 19, 2024 at 3:28 am

Fake News Check: There are no evidence whatsoever to show any proof that Russia blew up the dam, non…. how ever now everyone agrees that Ukraine blew up the north strem 2 … so that does makes them terrorist state… also it had been proven that Bucha was stage and all the people where killed by Ukrain artillery, that was confirmed by Ukranian pathologist 😢 that is why you don't hear any proof in regards to Bucha anymore. Ukraine president cleare stated that his victory is when the last Ukrainian dies, Zelensky is not Ukrainian, so he does not care, he only cares about making money 😢😢😢

    February 19, 2024 at 3:28 am

Russia committing war crimes is sadly nothing new. They have been very blatant about it since day one.
Also there is no maybe about it being a war crime, its 100% a war crime as it is a civilian target and indiscriminate in the damage it causes.

  21. @derrick211000

    February 19, 2024 at 3:28 am

Doesnt make sense for Russia to intentionally destroy the dam like this. The limited flooding with a small hole makes more sense, then they Russia'd it up and destroyed the whole thing by accident. Then blamed Ukraine. This seems the most plausible.

  22. @stevegraham3041

    February 19, 2024 at 3:28 am

Russia didn’t blow up the dam it was the US 🤦‍♂️

  23. @georgedowson2987

    February 19, 2024 at 3:28 am

The conclusion that it is unlikely to be coincidence that it failed just as Ukraine started counter-attacking isn't particularly sound. The dam has clearly been left unmanaged for protacted period (hence the super high water levels) and with advancing enemy forces, any engineers (Russiand or occupied Ukrainian) will not have been present to help save the dam. The satellite photos from the 28th of May, 1st and 2nd June, all show water breaching the dam. This could easily presage a complete dam failure. Look at other dam failures and you'll dams do not collapse in just one section and the level of damage seen is entirely what you'd expect if water was allowed to overtop for a prolonged period causing a structural failure, which spreads along the dam's structure. Secondly, it simply does not make sense that the Russians would have deliberately breached it, given that the flooding has damaged/destroyed many of their trench defences further down the river.
The explosions heard overnight into the 6th might easily have just been the dam collapsing, or possibly mines within the dam detonating as the structure failed. Russia is clearly, 100% culpable for the dam failure, given the obvious neglect of the dam and the potential mines etc, but, as per usual, it's more due to incompetence and indifference more than anything else that the dam collapsed.

  25. @starwarscoppers

I feel like saying it makes no sense for Ukraine to blow up the dam is being mentally and logically lazy and dishonest(at least w yourself) , you can say Russia in your opinion had more reasons that you may look at as more legit. But completely discarding the possibility of Ukrainian involvement is a bit rich. Especially seeing how this channel talked abt the "likelihood" of Ukrainian involvement in Nordstream and look now. I get they are the "good guys" in people's eyes. But jeez.

Binkov says that Ukraine has more to gain from Dams destruction.
The dams destruction smashes Russia's first line of defence, east bank is at a relatively lower level than west bank which Ukraine currentoy occupies.
Also, it's easier to cross the shallow river once the water subsides
