Germany has proven for the last 150 years that they are obviously the most powerful military in Europe. France has done nothing since napoleon in 1810.

Biggest difference between France and the UK in my eyes is the quality of French procurement and program management. The difference in outcomes between France's Scorpion program and the UK's similar Ajax program is night and day.

The whole British empire was just an effort to protect ourselves from the French.
Remember that all military words of the day come from the French; castle, siege, fortification, etc.
The French are active in the ME, Africa and S. America.

You can disparage the BE all you wish; just remember that it was an effort to protect ourselves from the French.

Polish dreams about 300 thousands army is unrealistic . Beside budget there is people factor – polish birth rate is the lowest in Europe – the country is depopulated and this process is speeding and the young people generally are not happy to join the army voluntarily – the money can't attract them as they have another options .

  21. @claudium6769

"Poland requested $15.6 billion in financial support from Korea to fulfill its second defense contract.

The value of the first financial assistance from South Korea is estimated at 12 trillion won, which is about $9.4 billion."

This means $25 billion in loans from South Korea to buy weapons. How many billions in loans from the US? Hope this won't affect the Polish economy by building debt..

  22. @olelain

    February 20, 2024 at 6:49 pm

The answer is France and the UK : they got nukes. Nukes don't care about all other numbers. Do you really think Putin is afraid of all the german and polish tanks and/or personal ? He doesn't mind sacrificing his own people as long as it's not in Russia. He's only afraid of the US, or of the UK and France deterrence.

  23. @historynerd1977

    February 20, 2024 at 6:49 pm

People don't realize that you need more than just money & equipment to fight wars. You need a self-sustaining economy, natural resources, manufacturing capabilities, logistical capabilities, large population, experienced veterans, capable youth, national pride, geographic advantages and effective leadership. France, Italy, Turkey & Russia are the military superpowers of Europe. Germany & Poland will likely emerge but that would also cause cause the Italians, French & Turkish to build even more powerful militaries and increase hostility in the region.

  24. @williamdavis9562

    February 20, 2024 at 6:49 pm

All these random stats a joke considering important factors like upkeep of platforms, stores of ammunition and the readiness and willingness of that nation's soldiers to actually fight a war are taken under consideration.

You can count that a nation has X amount of tanks. But that means nothing when 60% of them are broken down and not working. Nor does any of that matter if they only have enough ammunition to last a week or so in a large scale war.

Aside from maybe (big maybe) Poland, there is no EU nation which is even half capable of fighting a major war.

  25. @bohdan4677

    February 20, 2024 at 6:49 pm

If Soviet Union (Russia+Ukraine) did exist, it would have the biggest army. Russia should not conquer Ukraine.

  29. @michawojc6945

300k soldiers and 5% GDP in Poland that is frankly the ruling party's wet dream. 300K demographically impossible, 5% – they have already taken a huge loan in Corean banks to fund tanks without letting the nation know about it. Nevertheless, the army is exceptionally growing bigger in new equipment and skills. Luckily, some of it comes from Polish industry.
