While Switzerland is not apart of the European Union, it still remains geographically, politically and economically close with the bloc thanks to a series of bilateral agreements. However, the Swiss government recently held a referendum on freedom of movement within Europe as a result of supposed “uncontrolled” immigration. In this video, we discuss what happened and what the vote means for the future of Switzerland’s relationship with the EU.

To the Comment graphic: It wouldn't be a Swexit, as Switzerland wouldn't be leaving the EU (not being a member). It would only retreat from its current position, which would make it a Swiss Retreat – or: ReSWeat (ReSWeet) … if you will 😉

The Swiss would be well advised to make sure they still do have trading partners. They have pissed off 75 Million American Patriots, by allowing the Swiss media to interfere directly and deliberately in the 2020 Presidential Elections. Blick had the audacity to send a reporter to the US who streamed his live interviews directly out of the HQ of the US ex-pat Democrat abroad supported by the Blick TV Dj youngster crew, supporting his comments about our President with insulting facial smirks and body languages. You better learn Chinese – the 75 Million American Patriots will remember and most certainly not be your customers or tourists anymore. Bye-bye.

D…mb swiss or may i say… Effectively the "naturalization" of foreigners that ended up voting for this vote was what made the vote fail.
Migrants CHANGE the native demographics and worst thing uou can do is to give them voting rights do that they can change EVEN MORE.

I understand and agree about free movement. There some difficulties though. Even if unemployment still quite low compare to other European countries, Switzerland got a real problem dealing with commuters who living outside, go to work, having their ready-made meals and going back home with a salary without spending a penny in Switzerland. Salaries are now became similar for EU or Swiss citizens, but the former are still preferred because they can be manipulated, forcing them to accept specificities on their contracts. So it's "this or go back home to be unemployed or earn a much lower salary".

    February 24, 2024 at 9:46 am

Switzerland wouldn't have taken a great if we voted yes it would have only made us more international. We rely so much on the EU they alwas pressure us with the bilaterals. It would be better if we were more independant again.

  17. @neffscape6353

    February 24, 2024 at 9:46 am

First of all: I'm glad Swiss people rejected the initiative. While still independent, Switzerland deeply depends from the bilaterals. At the same time I'm living in one of the cantons where the agreement of free movement persons actually caused most problems, and I recognize that something has to be done. In my canton, right at the border with Italy, 28,4% of employees are frontier workers, so people living in Italy and working in Swizterland. Since the cost of living in Italy is much lower than the cost in Switzerland, these workers can accept wages much lower than those of workers resident in Switzerland. This means that in some sectors, cross-border labor is replacing the local one, leaving the Swiss with few options other than to change profession or domicile (many Swiss have moved to Italy in order to compete with the salaries of cross-border commuters). According to many of us, this phenomenon is not healthy in the long term (in my opinion Swiss people should have the right to live in their country). Therefore we need regulations. Unfortunately, the problem is not easy to solve and the European Union has not shown much interest in helping Switzerland to solve these problems … I think that aside from the nice words, the European Commission could help Switzerland finde and apply effective accompaniment measures. The Swiss are not against the principle of free movement of persons, but certainly they would like to receive some help from the EU to solve some not insignificant problems. It would be nice if the EU tried to understand these problems to help us solve them. It does not seem to me that much has been done so far in this sense (and that is why the anti-European sentiment in Switzerland is so strong).

Coverage in the Financial Times of this the week before the referendum predicted the outcome but went into a bit more detail about this and another important referendum coming up:

The recent Begrenzungsinitiative vote was, as pointed out by this video, a backlash against the perceived incomplete implementation of the 2014 vote. It was rejected apparently on the grounds that it was too prescriptive and much too obviously xenophobic. That does not mean that the Swiss have bought into the EU model.

As mentioned in the video, there are over 100 bilateral agreements between CH and EU. These have to be renewed from time to time. The EU is none too fond of this arrangement which is one reason it was never an option for brexit. Consequently, the EU and CH government last year negotiated a "framework agreement" to wrap up these agreements and simplify the geopolitical basis for EU-CH relations.

The EU set a deadline of July 2019 to ratify it, but CH hasn't done it, not even yet. Apparently, there was a public consultation that gave cause for the Swiss Confederation to pause and (says the FT ) almost certainly won't without a referendum, probably to be held next year. By the FT 's reckoning, such a referendum would likely be defeated by a similar margin to the Begrenzungsinitiative because, amongst other considerations, the framework agreement would give direct effect to EU regulation and court judgements, same as in any EU member state. This would short-circuit Switzerland's model of direct democracy so, unsurprisingly, it's an unpopular idea.

If next year's referendum on the framework is defeated, the consequences would not be immediate but they could be significant if the EU makes good on its promise to let the bilateral agreements "erode". It's anyone's guess what might happen in those circumstances and foolish to speculate given what can happen in the time frame involved.

  19. @hockneyfication

    February 24, 2024 at 9:46 am

With the proposed Institutional Framework Agreement (InstA) coming up, we Swiss will have to ask ourselves if we were not better off as a member of the EU. The EU definitely lacks the subsidiarity principle that Switzerland upholds, and nowhere do voters get the same rights in terms of direct democracy, but isn't the idea of changing the EU from the inside by building alliances with other countries rather than constantly battling against it as an outcast and a small country from the outside far more appealing?

  20. @SilverWave64

    February 24, 2024 at 9:46 am

So now, the already very foreign-looking Switzerland will become even more foreign. No interest in preserving its ethnicity and culture, just like the rest of west Europe. Really sad.

After vote of 2014, the new swiss raise as fear to be kicked off of the country….lots of swiss just put on the garbege bin their paper for vote because they are sick of our governament lie….in my opinion is more and more new swiss vote than a swiss that is here more than a century….and the funny things is that Ticino has made the right vote, for dumping reason….but the other 3 cantons I really dont understand what they have seen is coming, to vote the limitation….hope the rest of the canton did the right choice for all, not in my opinion, but I m 55 and close to the end of life job….that by the way I dont have 😬😬🇨🇭🇨🇭

There is no conflict in restricting immigration and participating in the common market. It is disingenuous of the EU to link one to the other. The EU should respect the choices of the electorate and not take sides in the issue.
