I know we addressed this in the video, but there's still a bunch of people talking about it, so on the HAI thing.

We are absolutely aware that HAI released a video on this exact topic only a couple of days ago. We started work on this video on August 20th and the script was finalised on August 26th, so in no way we did we steal anything from HAI – the script was locked down way before that video came out.

Regardless we contemplated not putting this video out, as we were concerned that people would be done with this topic having seen the HAI video. However, we decided that ultimately out video takes a very difficult approach from Sam's.

I don't mean this as an insult to the HAI video at all (I have been subscribed for a very long time and watch most HAI and Wendover video) but those videos tend to only lightly touch on each topic. They give you a brief overview of a topic in a few minutes to give you a starting point if you want to research further. Our video is that further research. As a politics channel and with a political audience we can take 10 minutes to explain the complexities of Belgium's political system which just isn't possible for HAI.

Ultimately I hope you enjoy both videos and as much as we were sad to see our topic taken days before posting, that's just how the game goes. HAI clearly had no idea our video was coming and we had no clue they were doing there's. Though if HAI start explaining trade deals or doing Brexit videos we might have to start writing a dis track…

It is complicated, but I think we can serve as an example. Two very different regions in one countrie and nobody has been injured or killed by violence or bombs or a civil war. I'll take 6 parliaments over that any day!

The ugly truth is the Belgian government in Brussels doesn't want to see its unequally complex knit up country torn apart and cease to exist. Even not at the cost of a good functioning democracy with an population educated to be involved that would doom the country into seperatism.

The ecomonist with their democracy index is not a EU saboteur nor a dutch Flemish seperatist newspaper. Mandatory voting democracies like Austria and Australia have scored very well according to them unlike belgium.

If Scotland wants independence, you could argue they are all xenophobic far right under the logic of Catalonia and Flanders in the post brexit EU.

3:15 here they weren't dutch speaking they were still Flemish

622 days without a government is preferable to the 1079 days the UK has had to endure a totally corrupt and incompetent government. Even when our exulted leader resigns we still need to use a crowbar if we want to remove him of his chair at number 10. If we succeed only time will tell.

  17. @koenven7012

    February 25, 2024 at 9:29 am

One little comment: in your video you say that Wilmes is the head of the MR, but that's not true. Unlike the UK the head of a party doesn't become automatically the prime minister. In fact, most often they don't, so the head of the party can keep campaigning without being in the government.

  27. @Fummy007

    February 25, 2024 at 9:29 am

Belgium doesnt have proportionality in entirety. You forgot to mention an important fact and the reason the Flemish are so mad. While flanders and wallonia are a 60:40 split population wise they get 50:50 in parliament. so the french speakers get more seats than they deserve.

  28. @coltonwilson

I didn't watch the video but how is the EU functioning since it has its capital in anarchy ?????????

  29. @MontChevalier

    February 25, 2024 at 9:29 am

Boy you left out a bunch of stuff. Like how Flanders was NOT a member of the Holy Roman Empire, but recognized French authority over it. Only Brabant and Belgium's western lands were members of the Empire.

And the Holy Roman Empire wasn't decentralized, but was centralized by it's princes, with the Emperor on top. They had rules people today are too lazy to look into.

And no, Belgium is not gonna divide. Parliament is just a puppet institution that's controlled by the rich who in turn make all the decisions in Belgium. Whoever controls voter count, controls the land.

Belgian resident here with a few remarks:
6:20 Parties can't run in both regions. Some parties are aligned ideologically across the border, but they're not the same party.
There is a huge cultural difference between the Flemish and the Walloons. The Flemish speak Dutch (sort of, see West-Flanders for extreme deviantions), are descendants of Germanic tribes, more liberal and (as stated) more affluent. The Walloons speak French (well an antiquated dialect anyway),are descendants of the Gauls, mostly conservative socialists (corruption scandals are disproportionally related to French-speaking politicians), and have mostly failed to modernize their economy.

Why is the culture difference so big? One example: The Flemish all learn French in school extensively as a primary subject. In Wallonia, it isn't even mandatory. In fact, many Walloons do not speak any other additional language. In politics, the Walloons have adopted a distinct obstructionist attitude, mostly to ensure the continued money flow from Flanders. Flanders has no control over how this money is spent. There are many bridges to nowhere in Wallonia because the Walloons demanded infrastructure work equivalent to those in Flanders… I could go on, suffice to say; there's a lot of bad blood. The country is essentially being held hostage by a minority and this is a major reason why Belgium performs so poorly despite its economically favorable geography.
