   Employees not tracking web history is just absurd. If you work with your employer's computer, they can do whatever they want with that computer, it's their asset – not only that, some industries require mandatory audits – for example in finance. You are not allowed to use a work computer for your personal life. If you do so, you're misusing the company's assets, there have been multiple court cases proving this. This law was just one of those that was rushed out as fast as possible during covid without lawmakers giving it much thought.

   I'm supportive of the right to disconnect and the right to not be monitored by microphone, screen capture and video by the employers (web history, a bit less so since…. well it's the internet and as long as there are no screen captures sensitive information isn't being captured since the history only shows where you're visiting not what you're doing and on the web someone always knows there's activity anyways). However, I'm not sure Portugal is in the right here. It's one thing to say "hey, you're abusing your workers by sending them home to work and then calling them in off hours." But in this case, it was the Portuguese government making online work mandatory and _then _ trying to rectify employer behavior that they provoked. If the Portuguese government did nothing the entire time, the status quo would have remained.

   The demand for "Right to Disconnect" stems from the issue of applying old working systems to modern day world. The reason why there were fixed hours in the past is because a lot of it deals with manufacturing. In manufacturing, if you spent X amount of hours, you can produce X amount of products. Therefore, more hours equate to more products made; no matter how productive you are, you are capped by the no. of hours you can put in.

   Now contrast that with today's world where someone with subject-matter knowledge is able to shorten the time taking to create something; and that sometimes more knowledge / experience is able to shorten the time more. It just makes no sense for them to still continue to be billed by the hour.

   However, this misunderstanding leads to companies wanting workings to contribute X amount of hours for the price that they are paid. As a result they start to get picky over things like working hours. And as they say, "Employees at the bottom are a reflection of the top management." If the management is going to be picky over every single minute that I am spending, then I am going to be picky over every single minute that is off work. And so the downward spiral led to all these coming into play.

   For employers, what employees want is understanding and trust. If you don't trust your employees, then you can be sure they are going to feel it… and they won't trust you as well. It has to go both ways.

   Honestly regulating interactions outside of work specifically when tied to work-related events seems really important

   I've been complained to in my free-time about why I didn't check my emails and go into a work-training event that wasn't exactly a once-only event. Called me at home.
   Again by acting-line manager waking to call me to change where I go, and after by normal line manager for going to where I was told as if I did bad by not being angry myself. Both called me at home. Complained when I called back to explain my frustrations.

   That was just one of three UK Workplaces that I had the issue with.
   Definitely would benefit from rules on how much they can bother with when you don't get paid.

   I Can’t imagine that in case of urgent situation I will ignore my boss. Even if law is on my side, the situation won’t be solved without my help and will create a lot of problems till tomorrow. So, I am a slave I suppose.

    I think you should have a right to disconnect but you should also have a right to work in an office and not just at home. For me its way easier to calm down when I work in an office and have free time at home.

    That would have been nice when I worked there. My boss would call me at all times… and as a working student working 10h per day, 6 days per week plus university.

    This must be a bigger issue elsewhere. Working in a school, the only messages I get outside of work are usually very essential or related to snowdays and emergencies.

    for the past 500 years, Portugal has always been ahead of most new things… In recent years we manage to win the war on drugs and be ahead on green energy and lots of other stuff…

    Take my most important advice…whenever you join new company…use that oppurtunity to separate personal and professional life…use two telephone numbers…once office hours are over…switch off office phone…never share your personal phone which you use for family and friends with any of office colleagues….

    Right to disconnect is needed in india because india is becoming outsource service centre of europe…and indians work for more than 12 hours and during crazy times…because india has huge unemployment problem…so employees are not in position to raise issue to indian labour courts …..now…onus is on indian govt to decide whether they want any respect for their citizens or country is okk being serf land of europe…

    Greece is literally the shittiest EU member. We only get the shit illegal totalitarian laws while getting none of the beneficial laws that come as movements at Europe. Well, that's what you get for voting the same 2 political families at 80% of elections

    Are you sure that "the vast, vast majority of us" moved to working from home? Maybe if you're only concerned with your own petty bourgeois class, but last I checked the vast majority of workers in the world are in fields requiring physical labor and we "essential" workers still had to clock on at work every day.

    I’m surprised this is news. I’m surprised this had to be legislated. Working hours are working hours. If you’re not paying the employee overtime, piss off!
