Satirical cartoons have a long and colourful tradition in France that dates back to the Middle Ages, but in recent years they have inspired controversy – and horrific acts of violence such as the attacks against Charlie Hebdo in 2015. Nevertheless, cartoonist Jean Plantu says debate will win.

People use the “Freedom of Speech” to justify Frances action. I am assuming they are invoking article 10 of ECHR, which is freedom of expression which includes paintings and books etc. Then in this case France is in the wrong as Article 10(2) of ECHR would tell them if they read the articles of human rights. France didn’t have problem removing offensive material in Garuady v France (2003), when criminal proceedings was brought against the author for public defamation of a group of people (Jewish community) and incitement to discrimination and racial hatred. So this is a precedent where it was found that this was not an infringement of Article 10 (Freedom of Expression) for the reasons above. Also in the case of Otto-Preminger-Institute v Austria (1994) where the feelings of the catholic religion was hurt because of a film and that film was removed and did not infringe Article 10 of ECHR. There’s a reason why Article 10(2) exists.

There is a line that must never be drawn. Criticizing people and their actions should and is done so by observations and facts and sometimes subjective, that is fine because that is on an individual level, but when you begin to insult, not even criticize, a religion? Your not just insulting the religion but the many people that follow that belief. And going against a religion isn’t done so by fact or observation, it is by fear so anyone who goes against a religion may do so as they please but in doing so you are sharing the fact you are afraid of them and irrationally at that.

There's no movie ever made on religious prophets including Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad in Muslims countries, why? Because visual depictions of religious prophets or gods is against their faith let alone drawing humiliated cartoon.

The French government and their accomplices must be debated and the entire civilized society must be banished. they must be held accountable and real punishment for their acts of terrorism.
Economic sanctions alone cannot be dispensed with; an international tribunal is needed to condemn all types of political terrorism.
