#EUdebate2014: Watch the EU debate LIVE on April 28th, 7pm CET

On 28 April 19:00 CET the first presidential debate of its kind will take place between the candidates for the next European Commission presidency live on euronews.

In partnership with the European Youth Forum and the City of Maastricht in the Netherlands the candidates, Jean-Claude Juncker (European People’s Party), Martin Schulz (Party of European Socialists), Guy Verhofstadt (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party) and Ska Keller (European Green Party) will battle out key issues for the future of Europe.

Until now the president of the European Commission was traditionally selected by unelected appointment but this time, according to the election slogan…”it’s different”. For the first time ever the European political groups are putting forward candidates for the presidency, giving you a say in who heads up the executive branch of the EU.

Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline inaugurated defying US opposition

http://www.euronews.com/ A gas pipeline between Iran and neighbours Pakistan has been inaugurated – defying opposition from Washington.

Dignitaries headed by the presidents of the two countries mingled before a very public handshake.

In a speech Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had a coded swipe at the US accusing, “foreign elements” of trying to derail Iran’s relations with Pakistan. “With natural gas you cannot make atomic bombs,” he said.

The 5.5 billion euro project dubbed the “peace pipeline” has faced repeated delays since its conception in the 1990s and is aimed at alleviating power shortages in Pakistan.

Work on the Iran part is almost complete, construction on the Pakistan side will now begin. The US has warned the project could incur sanctions connected with Iran’s nuclear programme.

One analyst said the pipeline not only caters to Pakistan’s energy needs but also earns brownie points with the many critics of the US among Pakistan’s electorate.
