In the international media, Ireland has a reputation as one of the most immigrant-friendly countries out there, accepting more refugees and asylum seekers than most European countries. But, in the past few months, that has apparently changed with a series of anti-migrant attacks and riots across Ireland. In this video, we take a look at what’s happened recently, why the attitudes to immigration have changed, and how this might affect Irish politics.

I dont mind European migrants but it a bit daft to be taking in Africans, West Indies and Asians because the racist Great Decolonizations imposed on Europeans and British (including Irish) of the mid 20th Century. Many ofbthese burned to death in their own homes by Nelson Mandela's African NATIONAL Council. Sub Saharan African countries are now a basket case since we were removed and poverty in India. Bangladesh and Pakistan is rife.

You forgot to mention one thing? Irelands 2030 plan and that is to add 1 million extra people to the population of Ireland so i think it is safe to say;this has been planned out well in advance,Irish politicians were talking about this more than five years ago and now the wheels have been truely set in motion

  5. @AodhanBeag

The growth of anti immigrant sentiment is a direct consequence of years of failings by the coalition government in its policies and poor handling of affairs mostly including the housing and cost of living crisis.

As rightly highlighted GDP does not equal to household income which is actually very poor with a huge wealth gap. They use it as smoke and mirrors to say they’re doing well as if it’s a business but their workers are being shafted and in poor work conditions (aka the general population)

And when people are struggling and looking for rationale to blame the far right rhetoric rears it’s ugly head to blame immigrants who come in as to why you’re underpaid and can’t get a house despite the cause being the companies and the Government policies affecting the supply and demand of housing etc.

Irish politicians are in an absolute freefall of denial right now. They get massive bonuses for accepting immigrants on top of their tax haven kick backs. They've leaned hard into unregulated capitalism at the expense of Irish voters. Their short sighted greed and lack of understanding or empathy has distanced them from the people.

As an Irishman I can say with certainty 'damn right we are'… Why wouldn't we be… Our own people can't find a house because our population has doubled through immigration in 30 years. No amount of housebuilding can keep pace with that…

These African and Asian migrants are mostly opportunistic young men. Ireland is an island and because of the terrible immigration policies in Brussels, Ireland’s social and demographic status quo has been negatively affected. Multiculturalism is a lie sold to once homogenous nations. You will never find these stupid ‘multicultural’ programmes in Asia or the Middle East. Even in ‘naturally’ multicultural countries like mine, Singapore, there was a backlash against the Singapore government’s liberal immigration policies back in 2015. Singaporeans showed their discontent at the polls. Immigration programmes like those in Europe, upset the demographic order that citizens are comfortable with. It makes them feel like they are losing their identity and culture.

Ireland is rich but Irish people are broke .. so blaming migrants it’s a broke seed cowardly planted by the government to their citizens .. fact is the most disgusting crimes committed in Ireland are done by natives Irish themselves and the worst crimes were committed by the British .. knowing that people are broke and the weather is not appealing Irish people should embrace the fact that foreign corporates and foreigners people are keen to contribute to the Irish society .. and help to stay relevant between low birth rates and being broke ! The government has to look after his people better and keep his gdp high that’s all ! Ego aside once again Blaming migrants it’s weak

Where I live in Belfast a neighbour runs a guest house. The people in there are now asylum seekers. The police are never away from her door. The noise out of these people is terrible. Fighting. Hanging around the street. This is not good. In 2009 other Nigerian asylum seekers lived in a house across from where I lived. one of this trash went on to murder Grace Moore. But while they lived there not one woman from 6 to 60 did they not have a sexual comment about. Our country is being destroyed by this.

We call them fakeugees here in Ireland! They arrive without any ID or documents, nobody know who they are but they're still let in and get put up in either hotels or brand new housing estates in rural locations throughout the country. Most of them are not fleeing war torn countries and are just here because Ireland has the most generous welfare system in the world!
